“Alexa, write my blog post.” How would you explain to someone who grew up only having their house phone and written letters to communicate, that in today`s world nearly every smartphone can identify their owner through fingerprints and/or facial features. No Nanny! For the fifth time unlocking my phone with my face does not mean robots will take over our world in ten years. “Biometrics scanners are hardware used to capture the biometric for verification of identity. These scans match against the saved database to approve or deny access to the system. In other words, biometric security means your body becomes the “key” to unlock your access.” These features are now on nearly every smartphone, laptop and tablet purely for the convenience of the users. Fingerprints or facial recognition technology can be used to unlock the users device within a second. Our fingerprint is used to give a second authentication level to making purchases through our phones or looking at private information such as our bank accounts. This means that even if a hacker finds out your passwords they may not be able to purchase anything, given that you have this feature enabled. This technology is also used in airports to ensure that the person is who they claim they are. A quick google search will tell you that the chances you and another person have the exact same facial features are less than 1 in 1 trillion. So, if you’re worried that you’re one of the the people with a doppelgänger that is going to track you across the world just to unlock your phone with their face, then maybe this feature ain’t for you. We actually use biometrics in many scenarios such as our workplace. Many Workplaces now let their employees identify themselves and sign in through finger prints. All of your information including your fingerprint is kept strictly confidential within your job. Speaking of workplaces, Alexa or Siri is at your service as a personal assistant! They can help you with commands such as “Alexa how bad is the traffic to work today?” This can help you avoid obstacles in your day. If you’re worried about a man with headphones listening to your every conversation on the other side of these I can promise you that they are not but if you feel you need to do so these apps can be temporarily or fully disabled. The use of biometrics can help reduce crime rates. For example, in Dallas transit agency is using new cameras which are a “biometric software solution that will be used for a range of purposes including monitoring train capacity, watching for medical emergencies and informing law enforcement when a wanted person is on a DART vehicle.” (S, Mayhew 2016). This would be so useful within Ireland’s darts and public transport as many crimes are reported week to week, and if after all this you still think that biometrics are dangerous or may lead to robots taking over the world ,then maybe you should pop around to my nanny’s for a cup of tea and I’m sure she will have some type of nice biscuits but until then, “Alexa end this blog post”. https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/find-your-doppelganger/ https://www.kaspersky.com/resource-center/definitions/biometrics https://www.biometricupdate.com/201602/dallas-transit-agency-piloting-facial-recognition-software
